Description

The original caption may contain language which is historic and which may no longer be considered appropriate. It has been retained in the record in the interest of historical accuracy.

The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Maternity and child welfare. Picture shows a doctor discussing the case of a difficult child with the mother. On the left the child is seen ‘playing’ with blocks, but really doing an intelligence test.”

The Lancaster Street Child Welfare Centre opened in July 1935. It provided a range of services, including an ultra violet light clinic, remedial exercise classes for toddlers and children, dental treatment, and a kitchen providing dinners for mothers and children. The building also housed a venereal disease clinic for women and children on the first floor. The Parents’ Guidance Clinic, staffed by a medical psychologist and assisted by a health visitor, provided assistance to mothers seeking advice regarding behavioural problems in their children. A total of 88 children and 51 parents attended in 1941, though a psychiatrist wrote that the work of 1941 was “unwarlike” and that at that time it remained to be seen if the war had a greater effect on children’s mental health.
