Description

Photograph album labelled, 'Cathedrals: Coventry, Vol 1.', containing 79 prints showing the initial stages of the construction of Coventry Cathedral. Included are images showing partially demolished buildings, excavation work and Priory Row and Collin's Winestore and Vaults prior to demolition, images of archaeologist, J. B. Shelton, inspecting old Norman wall of Bishop's Palace and photographs of archaeological finds including fourteenth century masonry and stone coffins. Also included are progress photographs showing workers driving piles, laying foundations, erecting shutters and concreting, as well as photographs showing L. Beyer carving foundation stone, images of HRH the Queen - including images of her inspecting model with architect, Sir Basil Spence - and general views of the foundation ceremony held on 23 March 1956.
