Bayham Old Abbey, Frant, East Sussex: Report on Geophysical Surveys, October 2017

Author(s): Neil Linford, Andy Payne

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and earth resistance surveys were conducted at Bayham Old Abbey, Frant, East Sussex, at the request of the English Heritage Trust who manage the site. The aim of the high sample density GPR survey (1.4ha) was to assist with the production of a new guidebook through providing information on the phasing of various stages in the development of the Abbey. Significant anomalies were revealed both within the standing remains of the abbey and over the wider guardianship area, including a range of buildings likely to represent the location of the infirmary and evidence for the later C19th designed landscape associated with the Dower House. Earth resistance survey (0.3ha) was successfully targeted over the infirmary building remains and included the identification of further structural remains over a raised mound of uneven ground where GPR measurements were hampered by the terrain.
