The Old Workhouse, King Street, Leigh, Greater Manchester

A young girl standing on the pavement in front of the former workhouse at the corner of King Street and Spinning Jenny Court. The building was originally a farmhouse dating from the 17th century. From the mid 18th century it was in use as a workhouse until closure in 1823. After this it was converted into shops. It was demolished around 1900. The photograph dates from the late Victorian period.
