Church of St Barnabas, Shacklewell Row, Hackney E8 - Hackney

St Barnabas was built as a Mission church between 1910 and 1911 by Professor Sir Charles Reilly. Constructed in mass brickwork it was roofed in concrete vaults on steel reinforcement, finished in asphalt and set behind parapets. The roof was repaired with a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic England in 2014 but the design of the rainwater disposal system cannot discharge storm water sufficiently and the condition is poor again, with leaking parapet gutters causing damage to the structure. Uncontrolled tree growth along boundaries is also damaging the church.
