SOUTHBROOK LANE
Southbrook Farmhouse

GV
II

House, formerly a farmhouse. C16 or C17 with later additions. Stone and cob
covered partly with old roughcast and partly with C20 render. Right-hand end
thatched, left-hand end covered with corrugated iron. Half-hipped to right, hipped
with gablet to left. Rendered granite chimneystack (heating former hall) on ridge
off-centre to right;, added shaft, probably of brick. Small rendered stack,
probably a later addition, in right-hand gable. Likely to have been of 3-room and
through-passage plan originally, with hall stack backing on to passage; later
extended at upper end and a rear wing built out to form a T-plan. 2 storeys. A
very long building with only 3 second-storey windows, grouped at left-hand end. In
ground storey the original front door, off-centre to right, has been converted to a
C20 window with brick jambs and metal casement. To right of it a C19 wood casement
window of 2 lights, each light of 8 panes. To left of it a small C20 wood-framed
window and to left of that a C19 wood casement window of 2 lights, each light of 8
panes, set in an earlier, partly blocked, opening. Left-hand end of building has
doorway with plank door to right and 2 C19 windows to left; the right-hand window
has a 3-light wood casement, each light of 2 panes, the left-hand window a wood
casement of 2 lights, each light of 6 panes. The 2 second-storey windows at this
end have C20 wood casements with small panes. The only other second-storey window
is above the partly-blocked ground-storey window and is of similar type, but with 6
panes per light. Right-hand gable, facing south-east into the hamlet, has 2 C19
wood casement windows in second storey, each casement of 2 lights with 6 panes per
light.
Interior: hall has granite fireplace of high quality with rectangular, hollow-
chamfered opening. Good relieving arch (partly disguised by beams of upper floor)
with 2 shaped pieces of granite filling the space above the lintel. Chamfered
ceiling-beam with no visible stops. Former inner room (now entrance and stair hall)
has a few chamfered joists, their ends cut off. Roof mostly rebuilt in C20 at upper
end, but remainder appears to be C18 or early C19 with plain principal rafters
having the collars pegged to their faces; no common rafters, just thick thatching
spars laid on the backs of the trusses.
