1/154 Ruins of Knowlton Church 18.3.55 II*

Former Parish Church, now in ruins. C12 origin, tower porch and north chapel C15, with aisle C18, abandoned in late C18. Walls mainly of flint, tower of flint and stone banding. Nave, chancel, north chapel, north aisle, south porch, west tower. Tower of 2 stages, with chamfered plinth, and parapet. String courses at base of parapet and below belfry level. In belfry, each face has a single light square-headed window with inner trefoiled arch. At lower level, one rectangular window in south face and in west face, remains of a 2-light square-headed window with trefoiled lights. Foundations only of porch. In south nave wall, south doorway with plain round arch. Lower part of a single light window. In chancel, lower walls only survive. Chapel retains a diagonal buttress and lower part of window. Foundations only of north aisle wall. Internally, remains of north arcade with one C18 round arch. Chancel arch, round with plain square voussoirs and chamfered imposts. Moulded corbel on east wall of chapel. Tower arch, pointed, of 2 chamfered orders. Sited in centre of a Neolithic henge Monument. Scheduled Ancient Monument, M18. (R.C.H.M. Monument 1. Dorset Vol V).
