3/100 Rectory Farmhouse 21.9.60 G.V. II*
Farmhouse, now house. Mid C15 origin, with mixed features from later alterations, late C18/early C19 addition to right, some C20 alterations. Sandstone rubble with limestone dressings, double Roman tiled roof with brick gable stack to left, ridge stack to right (formerly gable) and pantiled roof to right. Through passage plan. 2 storeys and 5 bays with heavy long and short sandstone quoins, straight joint to addition to right; ground floor has from left: 6-light wooden mullion and transom window with timber lintel and hood mould, 2 stone mullion and transom windows with 4-centred arched heads and hood moulds, framed door in 2 panels,studded, with flat head and moulded stone surround, 2 stone mullion and transom windows, hollow-chamfered with continuous hood mould; first floor has wooden mullion and transom window, oblong freestone panel below in moulded frame divided vertically into 2 compartments with carved heraldic shield in each, one with arms of Bishop Bekynton, carved heads at angles, to right a small stone mullion and transom window and similar 6-light window, 2 wooden mullion and transom windows, to left ovolo-moulded, all set under eaves; addition to right has stone 4-centred arched doorway, blocked, with 2-light C20 window inserted, small metal-framed light in chamfered stone surround, first floor has 2-light multi-pane casement with segmental head. Right return has 2-light casement with timber lintel at ground floor, similar casement at first floor with segmental head, line of former lower roof-line visible, 4 limestone quoins right and left at upper level only; lean-to with door and 6-pane light attached to right, small single storey outhouse attached at angle with door with strap hinges. Left return has external stack to first floor level with off-sets at top, first floor right has 2-light stone window with 4-centred arched lights, hollow-chamfered with hood mould, to left a 3-light similar window in 4-centred arched opening, hood mould partly cut away for verge of roof. Rear stepped in 3 sections, to right, French window and attached greenhouse, sash and weathered stack rising from eaves; rear through passage door in 4-centred chamfered arch, Cig half-glazed door, blocked window above and to left; attached to rear left by covered area, a former single storey bakehouse with brick oven set in corner. Interior: to right of passage, 6-panelled door in bolection-moulded frame, 2 rooms to left of passage with C19 stair against rear wall, at first floor to rear, a small room lit by 3-light window in gable end with moulded axial beam continuing the line of the hall wall and supporting a roof truss. Roof not inspected at time of survey, (January 1985) but said to contain 7 roof-trusses, some curved windbraces, arched-braces, cambered collars. For further details, see sources.
