School, latterly divided into three cottages, now museum and restaurant. C15 core, re-modelled late C16 with considerable later additions and alterations. Timber-framed with plaster and red brick infill, partly refaced and extended in early C19 red brick, graded slate roof. Hall range of two wide bays with later 2-bay cross-wing to left; early C19 pair of cottages (Nos. 2 and 3) built in angle to right. One storey and attic with two storeys to cross wing; framing: cross-wing has close-set vertical posts with middle rail and quatrefoil decoration (much renewed) to gable, carved bargeboards; moulded bressumer with stepped stops to first floor shows that gable was formerly jettied (a carved corner post was found to original left-hand corner during restoration, c. 1980) but it is now under-built in brick; gable end of hall range has herringbone decoration and close-set vertical posts with middle rail, square panels and long curving tension brace to rear; C19 fenestration repaired C20, leaded casement on each floor to cross wing and three to former cottages alternating with entrances, two slate- hung gabled eaves dormers; C20 casements to gable end of hall range have restored surrounds with moulded cills, ledged C19 doors to cross wing and former cottages (latter bricked over internally); re-built red brick stack immediately in front of ridge to right of gable.

INTERIOR: plan of original building indicated by moulded bressumer which runs around ceiling of main ground-floor room; square panels to front and rear walls with C17 oak rectangular panelling applied to right-hand wall, ceiling has chamfered cross and spine beams, latter with straight-cut stops; re-built inglenook fireplace and C18 cupboards with H-hinges inset in wall to left of staircase in hall range, light timber frame exposed to C19 cottage additions; ledged plank and muntin door with fleur-de-lys strap hinges at entrance to oak winder staircase in cross wing, another similar door at top of hall staircase; upstairs further timber frame exposed, decorative herringbone work forming lozenge patterns above and below tie beam of left-hand truss of hall range; massive plank floor boards and infilled Tudor arch doorway between bays of hall range; roofs of queen-strut type with slightly cambered tie beam to central truss of hall range; single purlins and straight wind braces to wide left-hand bay, inserted loft to right-hand bay; truncated chimney bay to left and similar roof to cross wing, which has later timber framed partition walls.

The building was originally part of Oswestry Grammar School,founded by David Holbache in 1407. This building occupies a prominent position on the edge of the churchyard of St. Oswald (q.v.). B.O.E. p.223.
