2/130 Langstone Court

18/5/53

GV II*

Former manor house and small country house, now divided into two. House and Farmhouse (Langstone Farmhouse, qv). C16 core, altered and extended C17 and C18, south-east wing -(now forming that part known as Langstone Court). c1700 with early C19 service wing to north dated 1827 and bow-fronted library extension to south c1825. Mainly English bond brickwork with ashlar dressings, squared sandstone rubble plinth, hipped slate roof to south-east wing, part timber-framed earlier core with some wattle-and-daub infill remaining, rubble refacing, squared rubble early C19 service wing, slate roofs. Irregular plan, south-east wing basically two rooms deep with central entrance and symmetrically placed blank arched chimney stacks, stair well to north-west incorporating earlier core to north-west which extends further to west (form- ing south wing of part now known as Langstone Farmhouse (qv) with further north, east and west wings to small central courtyard). Early C19 service wing extends to north. Two storeys, attics and cellars, rusticated quoins, moulded string course; symmetrical facade of five bays; glazing bar sash windows (possibly replacing former cross-casement windows [cf Bernithan Court, qv]) with smaller proportions to upper storey, two hipped dormers with 2-light leaded casements, 2-light stone mullioned windows light cellar, central doorway with steep pediment, supported on corbels, bolection moulded door surround, pair of 3-panelled doors. South return: two storey bow window with glazing bar sash windows, balustraded parapet; service wing to north of two storeys, three 3-light leaded casements, central ledged door, central lantern with weathervane. Interior: cruck truss of earlier house revealed toward west (remaining bays probably extended further to west [south wing of Langstone Farmhouse, qv] trusses no longer visible). C17 back stairs: dog-leg staircase, splat balusters and decorative finial to newel; late C17 main framed newel staircase, turned balusters, panelled newels and moulded strings; two rooms to west with early C17 plastered strapwork ceiling and running-vine ornament. Hall: b1700 plastered ceiling with geometric design, central oval panel and moulded bands, oak-leaf and urn enrichments, bolection moulded panelling, deocrative swags above bolection moulded surround to fire- place. Drawing room: c1700 elaborate plastered ceiling with fruit and foliage enrichments and central pendant, bolection moulded panelling. Langstone Court is a fine example of a house of this type and date and retaining many of its internal fittings. The house is set in a fine landscaped park with many established trees.
