ST 87 NE (east side)
3/505 The Rectory GV II Rectory, C17 possibly earlier, with early C19 north end and
alterations, north end possibly refacing a C18 house. Rubble stone
with stone tiled roofs. 2 storeys and attic. North end has 2
parallel gables to west front, end wall stack to right gable and
rear range gabled to north with ridge stack, overhanging boarded
eaves with shaped purlin ends. Raised quoins and raised window
surrounds. 2 attic pointed slits. 3 first floor 12-pane sashes
and 4 to ground floor, 2 each side of Roman Doric ashlar porch and
door with 2 fielded lower panels, glazed above. A painting of
c1780 shows similar windows and porch but parapet above, ramped up
to higher centre. Rear has tall projecting wing to left with later
C19 2-storey square bay. South end, set back, has 2 gables, ridge
and south end stacks. Left gable early C19, with boarded eaves and
attic pointed slit. Tripartite 4-12-4-pane sash in stone surround
and ground floor glazed conservatory with C19 inner glazed door.
Adjoining, to right, c18 pedimented stone porch with window to
front, doors each side and inner 6-panel door, 4 panels glazed.
Casement pair over. Right gable has C17 2-light ovolo-moulded
mullion windows, one with hoodmbuld to attic, 2 to first floor with
continuouse hoodmould and 2 ground floor C18 8-pane sashes in
moulded architraves with cornices on brackets. Rear of this range
has wallface chimney gable to left, one first floor 2-light
recessed chamfered mullion window with hoodmould and ground floor
lean-to. Bell-turret on roof slope to right and projecting wing
to right with east end stack and end wall lean-to. Sash windows to
south wall, 12-pane to first floor, pair of 8-pane windows below.
South of house range is 2-storey stable, C18, with upper 2-light
and 2 Tudor-arched openings. Ground floor timber-lintel entry,
door in chamfered doorcase. 6-pane window, timber-lintel entry and
another 6-pane window.
Interior: heavy beams to south end, massive bressumer between
south east rear wall and lean-to. Regency-style doors, fireplaces
and plaster mouldings. One rear room at north end with complete
mid-Victorian decoration. Listing NGR: ST8671076390
