VICTORY ROAD
Former Merchant Seamen's Orphan Asylum at Wanstead Hospital and chapel to the north west of Wanstead Hospital.

(Formerly listed under HERMON HILL E11)

1861 opened 1863 and closed in 1921. Subsequent uses include a convent and hospital before conversion into apartments during the late 1990s. Designed by George Somers Clarke. Built as Merchant Seamen's Orphan Asylum.A symmetrical design in banded red brick with Ancaster stone dressings. Three storeys plus gable dormers in hipped tiled roof: tower with squat spire. Modified Venetian gothic style. The chief external features are the tower and spire and the porch with Devonshire marble columns. The great hall was added in 1866.
