Meersbrook Saw Works II Saw works, offices and salerooms, now workshops. c1880, with
early and late C20 alterations. Red brick with painted stone
dressings and slate roofs with single gable and 2 ridge
stacks.
EXTERIOR: plinth, sill and lintel bands to each floor, eaves
band, wooden gutter. 3 storeys; 21 window range. L-plan.
Pilaster strips between the windows, with square recessed
panels with brick corbelled heads below each window on the
upper floors. Central double entrance bay has flanking
pilasters with faceted projections on the first floor. Open
pediment with roundel containing the firm's trademark in
relief. On the upper floors, 2 plain sashes. Below,
segment-arched cart entrance with rusticated piers and
voussoirs and lintel above inscribed with the firm's name.
To left, 9 glazing bar casements on the upper floors. Ground
floor has a late C20 off-centre door flanked by 4 similar
casements to left and 3 to right. Beyond, to right, a door
with side and top lights.
To right, 6 plain sashes, then a canted wooden oriel window
with cornice. Beyond, 2 plain sashes and a blank. Above, 10
smaller plain sashes. Below, a blank flanked to left by 2
sashes and to right by 3 sashes, all with altered glazing. To
right, below the oriel window, a moulded stone doorcase with
flat hood, panelled door and overlight. To its right, 2 single
pane windows and a door with overlight, all late C20.
At the rear, a parallel range, early C20, concrete framed with
brick infill and continuous windows.
C19 left wing, fronting courtyard, 3 storeys; 8 window range,
with irregular fenestration.
INTERIOR not inspected.
Joseph Tyzack & Co. were leading saw manufacturers until the
mid C20.
