8/136 Top of Quarlton Farmhouse - - II

Farmhouse, anciently known as Quarlton Old Hall, C16, altered in C17 and C18, renovated in 1960's, now house. Coursed sandstone blocks with large quoins, slate roof with chimneys at south end on ridge and at gables. L-shaped plan: earliest range on north-south axis 2 (perhaps 3) bays now mostly used as barn, with a wing added to east side of south end subsequently extended forwards to the south and across the original gable end. Two storeys. Original front facing slope on west side appears to have been raised; at ground floor 3rd bay includes original doorway to through passage (now altered as window), a 4-light double-chamfered stone mullion window with a hoodmould to the right of it; to the left under a continuous dripmould are windows of 4 lights in the 1st bay, 5 lights in the 2nd, the dripmould stepping over this, and a window with 2 round-headed lights; at 1st floor the 1st bay has a 4-light window with hoodmould, the 2nd has an inserted window and on the stepped portion of the band a rectangular surround of unknown purpose, and the 3rd has a later 4-light window. Rear, (present front) has a moulded doorway opposed to that at the front with a square window over the lintel and a blocked round-headed light to the left; to the right of the door altered masonry under an old gable line indicates a former lower wing. The present wing on the left, which is also lower, has a vertical joint with quoins in the middle of the gable wall, a round-headed light beyond this, a similar light at 1st floor to the right, and a small square window to the right of the ground floor. The south end wall of roughly 3 bays has a vertical joint with quoins to the 3rd bay, a doorway and a mullioned window to the right with an C18 3-light window above; and to the left coupled triple-light windows and a 2-light window at ground floor, a 3-light window above, all these of C18 type with flush mullions. Interior: altered, but contains at least one pair of cruck trusses, visible in the through-passage.
