6/132 Charlton Hill House -


House. Circa 1660 with late C19 alterations and additions. Red brick (English bond) with some stone dressings; plain tile roofs, 2-span to left. L-plan with C19 block in angle to north-west. Basement, 2 storeys and attic. Moulded stone plinth with buttresses to ground floor cill-height, floor bands, and stone-coped parapeted gables with kneelers; C17 gabled full dormers above second and sixth bays with segmental-headed 4-pane sashes, external brick end stacks with 3 square shafts, truncated to left. 7 bays; late C19 segmental-headed 4-pane sashes, some with flanking pilaster strips but straight joints flanking other windows suggesting their removal. Central 3-storey gabled porch, 8 stone steps up to round archway with flanking rusticated pilaster strips and dentil brick cornice above. One-storey C19 addition to left with truncated external brick end stack. Right-hand return front: 2 bays; French casements to left with bracketed hood. Projecting C17 gabled stair tower at rear, now partly obscured by C19 additions in same style as house. Interior: C17 staircase rising to attic in tower at rear: 3 flights to each floor around square well with closed string, splat balusters, moulded grip rail, chamfered square newel posts with bulbous finials, and pendants; ground floor front room to right with C17 panelling and corner fireplace with C17 overmantel with 2 double-arched panels, and oval and lozenge decoration; ground-floor room at rear with possibly re-used panelling and corner fireplace with C19 decorative-tile surround; C17 cellar door with decorative strap hinges; probably late C19 fireplace in entrance hall with 4-centred moulded arch, carved spandrels, and keyed lintel.
