North-west of Birtles
Hall GV II Stableblock, now houses, garages and stables. Early C19 for the
Hibbert family, with C20 alterations and additions. Red brick,
rising from an ashlar gritstone plinth, with hipped roofs, and
Welsh slate coverings. 'U' shaped plan, with advanced wings, and
with lower contemporary wing attached to west wing, all enclosing
a paved yard. Added double pitched canopy supported on steel
joist and central column links inner parts of advanced wings.
South elevation. Two storeys, five bays, the three centre bays
set back behind single bay outer wings which project southwards.
Centre three bays with shallow pediment, and circular clock face
within gable apex. Octagonal louvred cupola with shallow sheet
metal covered ogee roof and above, decorative finial and
weathervane. Stone copings to gable, and shallow parapet above
ashlar storey band.Ground floor carriage sheds below segmental
arch heads, one each side of a central single doorway, with six
panel door, below a segmental arch head. Vertically-boarded
double doorcase hung from pins in ashlar wall bands at head, mid
door and plinth levels. First floor window openings below
segmental arch heads, the centre opening blocked, the outer
openings with glazing bar sashes, 6 over 6 panes. Gables to outer
bays with plain hips and pitching eye to east wing, within ashlar
surround. West side wall of east wing, formerly with two stable
doors and flanking tall windows, one of which has been altered
to form third doorway. Two overloft doors, one now altered to
form a window. East side wall of west wing with stable doorways
now blocked, and with 4 C20 inserted windows. Lower two-storey
range attached to west wing with three segmental arch headed
carriage doorways, all with vertically- boarded doors. South end
with a C20 inserted glazing bar sash frame, 3 over 6 panes, to
the north, an inserted door. two overloft pitching eyes, and
between, a 12 pane window. North and west elevations to main
ranges altered to form late C19 and C20 dwellings, those to the
west with elevated and recessed doorways enclosed within semi-
circular arched openings, C20 glazing bar sashes and casements.
North elevation with C19 and C20 glazing bar sashes, all beneath
segmental arch heads. Three doorways, the two outer doors
boarded, the central door with 9 pane light to upper part. Stable
fittings, including ramped stall divider survives in only part
of east range.
