Nos.1-9 (Consecutive)) GV II* Six houses, now offices, part of a longer terrace. c1770-1800.
Flemish-bond brick, stone coping to the parapet, cornice,
stepped voussoirs, cills and cill band to first floor and door
cases; pantile roofs to Nos 2, 6 & 7, plain tile to Nos 3 & 4,
and slate to No.5, with brick stacks to right-hand party
walls. Double-depth plans.
Each is 3 storeys with attic and basement; 2-window range.
3/6-pane sash windows to second floor, 6/9 panes to first
floor and plate glass to ground floor. The 6-panel doors with
raised-and-fielded panels to the top and beaded ones below,
are to right of each house and set in doorcases with open
pediments and semicircular fanlights. Nos 3, 4 & 5 have
radiating glazing bars. The first floor has a continuous cill
band. Most ground-floor windows are late C19 plate glass
sashes.
Nos 2 & 3 to right, set back slightly from No.1 (qv). The
first-floor windows have semi-elliptical wrought-iron
balconettes with semi-circles between rails at top and bottom
and crosses to centre with lead ornament. No.4, stepped
forward slightly, is similar with late C19 cast-iron
rectangular balconettes with railings resembling bamboo and
with paired wrought-iron scroll brackets. Window to ground
floor has margin panes.
No.5, set back slightly, similar, with crown glass to the
fanlight. No.6, set back slightly, similar but with 2 windows
to ground floor, plain semicircular overlight to outside,
inner door with ornamental fanlight with crown glass, and
early C19 cast-iron balconettes to first floor of a horizontal
diamond design supported by diagonals; ground-floor windows
are horned, with plate glass. No.7, stepped slightly forward,
similar to No.6 but with semicircular balcony.
Rear service ranges altered C20, except late C18 block with
hipped roof and stack to rear of No.6. INTERIOR not inspected.
These houses form part of a fine late Georgian square built on
the site of Bridgwater Castle.
