Nos.1-13 (Consecutive)) GV II* Terrace of 13 houses. 1788. Probably by John Eveleigh.
Limestone ashlar, party wall stacks and slate mansard roofs.
Double-depth plan. Late Georgian style. Each of 3 storeys,
attic and basement; 3-window range.
A composed terrace with end and middle houses set forward with
pediments, first-floor sill bands, and central windows with
first-floor pediments; articulated by pilaster strips to a
cornice and parapet, and rusticated ground floor to a plat
band. Full attic storeys added to Nos 2, 3, 11 & 13.
Outer entrances have panelled pilasters, entablature blocks
with paterae, open pediments, semicircular-arched doorways,
No.8 has a stellate fanlight, plate-glass the rest, and
6-panel doors with upper 4 raised. Incised voussoirs with a
tall key to the ground-floor windows, with 6/6-pane sashes,
and 3/6-pane second-floor sashes; 2 dormers. No.9 has a
wrought-iron tented balcony with lattice railings, No.11 has
first-floor French windows to a tented balcony with cast-iron
railings and foliate brackets to fluted stanchions, No.2 has a
first-floor balcony with wrought-iron railings and cobweb
spandrels.
The right return has a 3-window range, the left 2 blind, a
matching doorway with panelled reveals, and a left-hand early
C19 shop window with eared architrave, moulded consoles to a
cornice, and painted glass facia.
INTERIOR: entrance hall divided by panelled arch from open
dogleg stair with stick balusters, column newels, curtail and
ramped rail, first-floor rooms linked by panelled folding
doors; marble fire surrounds, 6-panel doors and panelled
shutters. No.1 has good C19 shop fittings with display cases
with pediments, and a painted ceiling. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES:
attached cast-iron front basement area railings and gates with
bud heads.
Forms an important group with the matching Nos 32-44 Caledonia
Place (qv), and with Nos 1-31 Caledonia Place (qv) and Nos
14-34 West Mall (qv) forms a very good, and for Clifton
uniquely formal, planned square.
