TL 8422-8522 COGGESHALL CHURCH STREET
(north-west side) 9/36 Nos. 9 and 11
(T.C. News) GV II Two houses, now shop, flat and stores. C15/16, altered in C19 and C20. Timber
framed, plastered and weatherboarded, and painted brick, roofed with handmade
red plain tiles. No. 9 comprises a main range facing SE with an early C19
internal stack at rear, and a wing to rear of left end, with internal end stack
and single-storey extension beyond. No. 11 comprises an early C19 main range to
right facing SE, a parallel range to rear of it, and a wing to rear of the right
end; C20 single-storey wing to rear of left end. Beyond the right wing an early
C19 ancillary building, partly of red brick in Flemish bond, aligned ENE-SWS,
almost closes the courtyard so formed, and a late C19/early C20 workshop roofed
with corrugated iron to SW of it completes the closure. 2 storeys. No. 9, late
C19 shopfront of 6 lights with half-glazed door, plain overlight, 5 simple
pilasters and moulded fascia; first floor, 2 early C20 sashes of 4 lights; gault
stack. No. 11, mid-C19 shopfront of 2 symmetrical windows of 15 lights curving
back to central double half-glazed doors with marginal lights and blocked
overlight; 3 simple pilasters and moulded fascia; to left, blocked door to
house, and overlight with diamond tracery; first floor, 2 early C19 sashes of 12
lights and central blank aperture; gault stack. The left return of no. 9 is
partly weatherboarded, and has on the first floor one early C19 horizontal sash
of 9+9 lights with crown glass, and one early/mid C19 window of 25 fixed lights.
Most of the timber frame is concealed by interior finishes, but between the 2
shops a heavy post is exposed, with original groundsill and a straight brace
trenched to the left side of heavy studs, apparently the 'high end' partition
wall of a late medieval open hall. No. 11 has in the rear wing an early C19
quarter-turn stair with turned newels, wreathed handrail, and stick balusters
covered with hardboard; on the first floor of the main range a mid-C19 cast iron
grate with elaborate embossed ornament.
