Parish church. C13 origins, reworked C14 and C15, with C16 and C17 details.
Mixture of ironstone rubble, coursed in parts, clunch blocks and brick
repairs, with ashlar dressings. Clay tile roofs. Chancel, nave, N porch,
SW tower. Chancel: C14 origins. 3-light C19 E window. S elevation has 2
C16 square-headed 2-light windows and a small 4-centred arched doorway,
Plain stone-coped parapet. C14 pointed chancel arch. Nave: late C13
origins. N elevation has C13 lancet to W, 2-light square-headed C15 window,
and C17 square-headed window of 3-lights with transom. C14 doorway. S
elevation has 2-light C13 window to W, C16 square-headed 2-light window (high
in wall, formerly lighting a gallery), and C15 2-light square-headed window.
Blocked C14 pointed arched doorway. Brick embattled parapet with stone
coping. N porch: very plain, gabled, and of late date. Tower:C15, inserted
into SW angle of existing nave. Variety of buttresses. 2 stages. Pointed
archways on E and N into nave. W doorway now blocked by red brick buttress.
Square-headed 2-light windows to all sides of bell-stage. Plain brick
parapet with stone coping. Interior: nave has blocked rood staircase to SE
angle and squint into chancel on N side of chancel arch. C15 moulded roof to
nave, C19 chancel roof. C12 circular font has 4 different pieces of foliate
carving. Marble wall monuments in nave. One to William Duncombe d,1603
with armorial shields, inscribed tablet and scroll pediment with putti and
achievement of arms. One to Lady Elizabeth Duncombe, probably later C17,
with cartouche in ornate surround, the putti to base probably C19. Simpler
one to Sir John Duncombe, d.1687, with inscribed tablet and fluted cornice.
