Dean Fields Farmhouse
(formerly listed as Near Dean Fields Farmhouse) II House and 2 cottages, now all one. House mid-late C17 with early C18 porch,
cottage on left dated 1691, cottage on far left early C18 with C19 alterations.
Coursed millstone grit, stone slate roofs. 2 storeys. House: baffle-entry plan,
five 1st-floor windows. Quoins, chamfered plinth. Central gabled porch, with
shaped kneelers and ashlar coping, has doorway in left return with chamfered,
quoined surround and ogee-moulded lintel inscribed with 'PSH 1722' and scrolls.
Inner doorway to house has chamfered, quoined surround and deep lintel. Double-
chamfered mullion windows: to left of door of 3 lights, mullions removed; to far
left of 4 lights with king mullion; to right of door of 7 lights, now 3, with king
mullions; and to far right of 4 lights, now 2. Continuous drip mould. 1st floor
windows of 3 lights; 7 lights, now 6, with king mullions; 3 lights, mullions
removed: 2 lights; 2 lights. Shaped kneelers and coping to right gable. 2 corniced
stacks, to ridge and right end. Cottage set back on left: one 1st-floor
window. Quoins on left. Doorway to left has quoined surround, the lintel
inscribed'AM AR PSH'. Double-chamfered mullion windows: of 6 lights with king

mullion to right of door; and of 9 lights with 2 king mullions above. End stack
to left. Cottage to far left: 2 later 1st-floor windows. Quoins to left.
Doorways to left and right have chamfered quoined surrounds and deep lintels, door
on right now window. Between doors, on both floors, a 2-light flat-faced mullion
window with lintel and cill, and to left on 1st floor a C20 window with stone
lintel. Shaped kneeler and coping to left gable. Rear: roof lower than at front.
House: blocked, quoined doorway to left with a 2-light double-chamfered mullion
fire-window, mullion removed, to its right. Further to right a chamfered,
round-arched light with, to its left, a 2-light double-chamfered mullion window,
mullion removed. To right, above, a blocked taking-in door, now window. Interior:
house: housebody has bressummer for smokehood, chamfered spine-beams, and on left
a Tudor-arched chamfered, quoined doorway. Right room has fireplace with stone
newel stair beside it. Cottage on left has large fireplace with incised lintel.
The initials PSH, AM and AR stand for Peter and Sarah Heaton, Ann Midgely (Sarah's
mother) and Ann Redman (Sarah's sister). The property came from the Midgely's to
