Church. C11 and C12 west tower with C15 upper stages, rest largely C14 and C15, C19 restoration by Pritchett and Son of York. Norman work in irregular sandstone rubble, later work ashlar, lead roofs. West tower, 3-bay nave with aisles and south porch, 2-bay chancel with north and south chapels continuous with aisles, north vestry. West tower: 4 stages, quoins to lower 2. Restored west doorway with hoodmould; a 3-light Perpendicular window above; several small slit windows to right; a lancet to each return. Ashlar upper stages set back at string courses. Clock beneath two 2-light belfry openings on west side, 3-light belfry opening to each return. Cavetto-moulded course with water spouts beneath embattled parapet with corner pinnacles. Nave: south porch to bay 1 of aisle has wave-moulded plinth and offset diagonal buttresses; moulded arch with hoodmould and peaked string course over; embattled parapet with corner pinnacles; vaulted, ashlar roof. Aisle has plinth and offset band; at west end a diagonal buttress with ogee-headed niche; another buttress to right of bay 2. 3-light windows with cusped lights and curvilinear tracery; keel-moulded hoodmoulds with carved-head stops. Cavetto-moulded course beneath roll-moulded parapet copings. Three 2-light clerestory windows. Embattled parapet to nave. Chancel: lower, embattled. South chapel: massive, diagonal offset buttress to right. Offset buttress divides two 3-light windows, window to right has different tracery with downswept mouchettes. Ogee- headed priest's door. Parapet continuous from aisle. East window: Perpendicular, 5 lights with panel tracery, hoodmould. Flat-topped embattled parapet with cross. South chapel: 3-light east window, Decorated; raking parapet as aisle. North chapel: Perpendicular 3-light east window, plain-ashlar copings to parapet. North wall: square-headed windows; added C19 vestry. Interior: nave arcade has square plinths, octagonal columns and moulded capitals to double-chamfered arches. Narrowed tower arch now reinforced by concrete sub-arch. Part of a Saxon cross is built into the south wall of the tower. North aisle: two C14 recesses, one moulded the other ogee- headed. South aisle: has an C18 painted ceiling with panels decorated with unicorn motif (now in poor condition). Chancel: double quadrant- moulded chancel arch on tripartite responds with moulded capitals. Alterations to chancel evidenced by square-headed window openings now cut across by double-chamfered arch to south chapel. On north side a tall opening of 3 cusped-headed lights also cut into by later arch. In the south chapel an ogee-headed reredos beneath the east window,to its right a statue niche and an ogee-headed piscina. Also 2 alabaster effigies on a chest tomb decorated with shields in circles and quatrefoils: knight with head on uncrested helm, lady to his left with head on tasselled cushion flanked by angels. Thought to be Sir John Bosvile and his wife Anne c1400-1410 (Routh). C17 box pews with knob finials; in the chancel a family box pew made up of pre-Reformation bench ends; poppyhead choir stalls. Font: Perpendicular, octagonal with heavy Jacobean oak cover. Jacobean altar rail with sturdy turned oak balusters, moulded rail and large end finials. In the north chapel a low memorial surrounded by shields, to Katherin Godfrey d1658. Above vestry door a plaster over-mantle recently salvaged from Low Farm, Edderthorpe; depicts the Savile owls and the Garter of Arms of Queen Elizabeth but said to date from c1630. P. E.
