SAMPFORD SPINEY
SX 57 SW
7/97
- Sampford Barton Farmhouse GV II Farmhouse. Probably an early C16 house, with mid C17 wing remaining, C18 stair
alterations and panelling, early building demolished and replaced by c. 1840 block
with some later alterations. Granite and slatestone rubble, asbestos slate roof with
gable stack to rear wing, C19 block faced in stucco and lined out, with hipped slate
roof and rendered stacks with caps to sides.
Original plan not known because the main range was rebuilt c. 1840, leaving only a
section of its rear wall with its original doorway, leading to the surviving c. mid
C17 rear wing (possibly originally kitchen wing) with a gable end stack and an
outshut, possibly integral, on the lower side. The original main range was replaced
c. 1840 by a 3-room range with stair hall passage along the rear. It is possible
that this range is a remodelling of an C18 build because the existing stairs appear
to be C18.
C19 front of 2 storeys and 3 windows, all 12-pane sashes in plain reveals, some C20
replacements with horns, deep eaves and single-storey addition of C20 to left. Right
return has blocked door at lower gound floor right, rear of front range has ground
floor 2-light casement and at first floor a 16-pane sash to left and 18-pane light to
right. Left return of front range has single-storey addition with 3-light window
with segmental head.Rear wing has at right return 5 external granite steps to upper
floor, probably later addition after stair alterations of C18, with half-glazed door,
at ground floor C19 3-light casement with segmental head, large granite quoins; gable
end has 4-pane sash at ground floor, smoke chamber and oven projection at base of
flue, slate string course above, first floor has small 2-light casement set in
chamfered granite surround with slate dripstone; to left, roof line extended and
joint visible, small 2-light casement at first floor right, C20 single-storey granite
addition to right.Roof also raised to left, weathering to gable end stack. At left
return of wing, wall thickness slightly less on external wall, wing probably extended
later C17, also with large granite quoins, rear door with strap hinges inside C20
lean-to; C20 plate-glass window at ground floor and small single-storey addition with
4-pane light.
Interior The original rear doorway of the original main range is now an internal
doorway between the 2 ranges. It is in granite, hollow-chamfered with depressed 4-
centred arch and stepped stops pintles remaining and C20 double doors, keeping hole
to left, wall projecting to left, possibly site of earlier stair; fireplace has flat
granite lintel, chamfered, smoke chamber recess to left, ovens closed off to right.
Step up to C19 block with C18 staircase with turned balusters and panelling, other
features of mid C19. An interesting example of development by accretion.
