TRINITY CHURCH,
SCHOOL AND VICARAGE II Boundary wall, railings and entrance gateways. 1876-8. By Henry and Medland Taylor
continuous boundary comprised of brick and masonry walling, intermediate piers, metal
railings and entrance gateways and gates. A unified design of different elements, enclosing
Holy Trinity Church, School and Vicarage (q.v.) but expressing the different status of
each building. Brick walling with ashlar dressings, and plain and decorative metal railings
and gates. West side (Portland Street) with 3-bay wall with ashlar plinth and coping,
incorporating drinking fountain with projecting bowl 6 bays of railings, with two
intermediate copied piers to each side, linking with angled entrance gateways to
churchyard at north-west and south-west corners. Gateways with stepped gables
incorporating open niche above stepped pointed archway springing from gate piers set
within flanking abutment walls. Decorative double iron gates to each archway, that to
the south-west with double triangle finial. Inset post box in south abutment walling.
South side (Dean Street) with 4 bays of plain railings, with intermediate piers, then single
masonry bay, flanking on gabled gate posts to organ chamber entry to church. Decorated
iron double gates. Two further bays of plain railings, then solid bay, a further bay of
railings, and then tall stepped gabled gate piers to vicarage with blind tracery motifs to
pier faces. Low decorative iron gates. A further bay of railings, and then four bays of
solid wall with intermediate piers with gabled pilasters. Angled corner carries wall onto
east side (Bentinck Street) where 3 bays and 2 further bays flanking gateway to vicarage
yard complete enclosure of vicarage. 3 bays of railings between masonry piers, each
railing bay divided into 3 sections by metal strainer post with double triangle finials.
School side entrance with double iron gates, and one further bay of decorative railings.
Solid masonry angled corner returns onto north side (Kenyon Street). 2 bays of
decorative railings and an entrance bay with double decorative gates, flanked by plain
railings linked to intermediate piers. Two further 3 section bays of railings end at
terminal pier of schoolyard enclosure. Railings then revert to plain pattern, for two bays,
then to solid bay incorporating entrance piers to vestry gateway now with plain railings,
and final four bays of railings link with return wall of north-west corner gateway to
churchyard.
