EASTGATE STREET AND ROW (South side)
No.24 Street and No.30 Row (Formerly Listed as: EASTGATE STREET Nos 22 & 24 Street & Nos 24-30 (even) Row) 28/07/55 GV
II 24 Eastgate Steet and 30 Eastgate Row South form an undercroft shop, Row shop, and former townhouse, which was rebuilt in the late C19 in Vernacular Revival style on the site of an earlier building. Unusually, it is one of only three buildings in the Chester Rows (the others being 22 Eastgate Street and 24-28 Eastgate Row South, and 17-19 Lower Bridge Street) where the once-common practice of enclosing the space over the Row stallboard with a small cabin or ‘kiosk’, and retaining the Row walkway behind, has survived. For much of the C20 the undercroft shop, which is open to the adjacent building at 22 Eastgate Street, was occupied by a chemist. In 2022 the two undercroft shops were occupied by a single retailer. The building has a timber-framed front with plaster panels, and is of brick to the rear. It has a grey-slate roof at right-angles to Eastgate Street. EXTERIOR: the building is of three storeys, including an undercroft and Row, plus an attic.
At street level the shopfront to the undercroft is a continuation of that of 22 Eastgate Street, as is the soffit to the jettied kiosk at Row Level above. Both the shopfront and soffit have small scattered, pargeted-plaster panels. The Row Level has a kiosk located in front of the Row walkway, and there is a modern Row shopfront.
The third storey is directly above the face of the Row-front kiosk and has broad (probably false) end and central timber posts. There are two canted three-light oriel windows with mullions, transoms, and a semi-circular pane with keyblocks above the transom of the central lights. To either side of both oriel windows is a close-studded panel with a mid-rail. To the attic is a gable, which is jettied on three shaped brackets and has a row of 12 shaped panels below a pair of two-light mullioned, leaded, casement windows. The windows have curved herringbone bracing to each side and a jettied collar with straight herringbone struts above. The gable has moulded bargeboards, a finial, and a small-framed east return. INTERIOR: both the undercroft and Row shops have all their features covered. The upper rooms could not be inspected, but the third storey is stated to retain its plan form and some doors and mouldings. Visible features in the cellar are from the late C19 and C20.
