Slack House and attached barn

GV II

Farmhouse, now house, with attached barn. Probably late C17 or
early C18; altered. Slobbered rubble with quoins, slate roof
with stone slates in the lower courses. Single depth plan, 2+1
units on east-west axis, facing south, with shallow rear
outshut, barn continued to east and added barn attached at
right-angles to south-west corner.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, now 3:1 windows; with a wide
single-storey gabled porch in the centre of the main range,
one rectangular window on each floor to the left and 2 to the
right, and one window on each floor of the further bay to the
right, all with vertical alignment between floors, and all now
with plastic double glazing. Remains of some former
flush-mullioned windows are visible: a 2-light window on each
floor to the left, and at least one 1-light window above the
porch. Gable chimney to left, ridge chimneys at both junctions
to right. The barn continued to the right has through-stones,
external steps to a loft doorway, and another doorway to the
right of the steps. The barn attached at the left corner has
an altered wagon doorway near the junction with the house,
with long rubble voussoirs above the present lintel, and a
blocked loading door to the left. Rear: shallow L-shaped
outshut; small 3-light oak-mullioned window to loft at east
end.
INTERIOR: the housepart to the right has 2 lateral beams, the
first now with a partition to the entrance hall inserted under
it and the other with 2 bearers of a former smokehood
(formerly with a beef-box above), and a built-in 2-door
cupboard with shaped fielded panels. The parlour to the left
and pantry to its rear are crossed by a large lateral beam.
The 3rd bay has a similar lateral beam, and a small bread oven
built into the back of the chimney stack to the housepart.
