A group of people stood on a city rooftop and looking off in the direction of where the instructor is pointing. Skyscrapers, buildings, train tracks and a river are visible in the background.

Expanding the Programme

We are excited to be expanding the work of our Emerging Talent Placement Programme thanks to generous funding from the Mercers' Charitable Foundation and the Benefact Trust.

In addition to expanding the Emerging Talent Summer Placements, which offer up to 12-week placements for 18- to 30-year-olds, we are able to introduce innovative Step Up Placements: six-month salaried placements for those who have undertaken a Emerging Talent Placement.

Step Up Placements provide a really exciting and new addition to our early careers and inclusivity work and are vital to ensure young people see opportunities to develop heritage careers. They offer an entry point into a career in heritage and enable these young people to build and hone skills, experience and networks, both at Historic England and beyond.

These placements will be targeted at young people from diverse backgrounds, preparing them for working in the heritage sector, providing opportunities to enter the workforce and including training and support to sustain a skilled workforce.

Thanks to a generous grant award from the Mercers' Charitable Foundation, we will be able to recruit an additional four Emerging Talent Placements and six Step Up Placements.

Benefact Trust recently awarded us funding as part of their Movement for Good awards. This funding will enable us to offer two young adults from under-represented backgrounds a paid six-month Step-Up placement with Historic England or one of our partners in the heritage sector in 2025.
