The gardens at Hidcote Manor were created by Major Lawrence Johnston between 1907 and 1948, when the gardens were acquired by the National Trust. The gardens are described as being in the Arts and Crafts style, and form a series of named 'rooms'. The Theatre Lawn, which was part of the second stage of development by Johnston, which took place between 1914 and 1920, divides two main areas of the gardens. At its west end, ornate steps lead up to a raised circular lawn enclosed by a yew hedge.
