The caption on the reverse of the photograph reads: “Fryatt Memorial Hospital, Harwich. Picture shows Ministry of Health stretchers, splints, crutches, etc. placed ready for use.”

In 1922 a large house in Dovercourt was converted into a cottage hospital with 12 beds. By 1925, the hospital was known as the Harwich and District Hospital and Fryatt Memorial, named after a Harwich mariner who, as captain of the SS Brussels, was executed in 1916 for attempting to ram a German U-boat whilst sailing to Rotterdam. The hospital had 26 beds and a new wing, which included an operating theatre, a men’s ward, two private wards, and accommodation for nurses, was opened in 1925.
