Description

Also for Listing. Photographer's note: 'Designed by Powell and Moya and built between 1946-1962. Completed under the Abercrombie Plan which was part of the County of London Plan published in 1943 in anticipation of the end of World War Two. Comprising 1,600 homes in 32 blocks. Tall slabs of between nine and eleven storeys are enclosed by seven storey blocks and interspersed with maisonettes and terraces. There are a large number of mature and young trees, species include pseudo Acacia, Hornbeam, Lime, Norway Maple and Whitebeam. An innovation on the estate was heating via a system that was supplied by waste heat pumped through a tunnel from Battersea Power Station across the river Thames. This was operational until 1983, only the Accumulator Tower remains.'
