Series: Airviews Collection - subject series
- Date:
- 1950 - 1989
- Reference:
- AFL03/17
- Type:
- Series containing Photographic material
The collection contains film negatives in colour and black and white of oblique aerial views produced by Airviews between about 1947 and 1991.
The total number of negatives in this series has been estimated on the basis of the number of boxes (108) multiplied by the estimated number of negatives per box (1000).
The negatives primarily show premises of public and private organisations but there are also views of villages, towns and cities.
There are 2 separate sub-series within this series. The first covers the period circa 1950-1982 and contains black and white negatives with unprefixed reference numbers; and the second covers the period circa 1979-1989 and contains colour negatives with reference numbers prefixed with C/N. Some colour transparencies may be included among the latter sub-series.
The negatives were decanted from filing cabinet drawers into boxes before they arrived at the NMR and the alphanumeric codes of the boxes reflect the codes on the drawers. This order is not the original filing order used and the handlist for both sub-series has therefore been put into an alphabetical list to assist searching.
No finding aids exist for this series but the alphabetical sequence makes checks for particular places or organisations possible.
Details of each negative are recorded in registers numbered 87 to 92 on the register handlist (AFL03/03) and these often include date, client, location and photographer.
A handlist of this series is available.
The Airviews collection, which seems to have begun in 1947, was purchased by Aerofilms in 1979 although Airviews continued to trade separately until 1992.
This is part of the Collection: AFL03 Aerofilms collection
