A collection of four hundred and twenty two colour slides showing shops, shopfronts, and High Streets or shopping precincts in England, Wales and Scotland (17 of the slides show locations in Wales or Scotland). There is a good even distribution of shops between London and Greater London, and the rest of England.
London examples include well-known department stores such as Dickens & Jones, Harrods, Fortnum & Mason, Liberty & Company Ltd, and Selfridges, as well as ethnic clothing shops, food and drink retailers, and independent businesses. High end retailers such as Garrard and Asprey are also photographed. Meanwhile many of the regional shops are local, independent or family-owned businesses; village shops and general stores are commonly shown. There are also a handful of 20th century or modern shopping precincts, parades and shopping centres.
Many of the shops shown have retained their original shopfronts, often from the Georgian, Victorian or Edwardian period, and there are several very good examples. In London these include Lloyd’s Dairy, Clerkenwell and Berry Brothers and Rudd Ltd, St James’s. Regional examples include Swaffer Antiques, Arundel; B Payne and Son Ltd, chemists, Wirksworth; and E H Hooper, silk mercer and draper, Bridgwater.
Although many of the premises continue operating as shops, others have since closed or changed hands, and several have been converted into private houses.
This is part of the Sub Series: EFC01/01/03 Public Building Types; within the Series: EFC01/01 Series of 35mm slides; within the Collection: EFC01 Edifice Collection
