Description

Photograph album labelled, 'Aerodromes: Thurleigh Runway', comprising 57 black and white prints. Some of these document the construction of the runway at Thurleigh (1952-1953) and include details of weigh batching plant and machinery in operation such as the Caterpillar D8 tractor, Koehring paver and SGME finisher. Also included are images, dated 1 November 1957, of Royal Aircraft Establishment buildings including fire station, petrol station, boiler house, hangers, workshops, aero-technical offices, pilot's block, canteen and control tower and images of air show on 27 June 1957, including views of group of dignitaries inspecting aircraft on hardstanding, print showing 'The Flying Bedstead' (demonstrating vertical take-off), and DH110 ready for take-off on raised steam catapult.
