Description

The Wool Exchange was completed in 1867, to an 1864 competition-winning design by Lockwood and Mawson. At either end of the main hall, which is surrounded by granite columns, are rose windows. A statue of Richard Cobden was unveiled in 1877; Cobden is also commemorated with a portrait medallion in the spandrel of the ground floor arcade. The building was used as a wool exchange until the 1970s, and was converted into shopping units in the late 20th century.
