The sports ground was opened at the Glebe in 1860. It is believed to be the oldest sports ground in Tyne and Wear, along with St John's Green in North Shields. Whickham Cricket Club (founded 1860) has occupied the ground since its opening, and later shared the ground with the Watergate Colliery and Axwell Park Colliery football teams. The Axwell Park team had been formed in 1944 as Whickham Football Club, a name to which it later reverted. This photograph was published on page 110 of 'Played in Tyne & Wear' by Lynn Pearson.
