Hall Farm
II
Farm outbuilding. Mid C17, with minor C19 and C20 alterations. Coursed squared Coal Measures sandstone with stone dressings, quoins, coped gables with integral kneelers, and stone slate and Welsh slate roof coverings. PLAN: L-shaped complex, comprised of 3-bay THRESHING BARN, aligned north-south, with a 3-bay range extending eastwards from the south end, and formed from a single bay extension to the barn, and a 2 bay STABLE, now cowhouse with loft over. WEST ELEVATION: Symmetrical front, with quoined central double doorway with flat timber lintel beneath a shallow segmental relieving arch. Boarded doors, now suspended from C20 sliding gear. Flanking the doorway are shallow stacked breathers, 4 to each bay. EAST ELEVATION: Tall double doorway to left-hand bay with half-hung vertically-boarded doors beneath flat lintel set beneath shallow segmental arch. Single breather to right. C20 lean-to against north gable, which incorporates breathers within its apex, and blocked openings below. STABLE RANGE; NORTH ELEVATION: 2 storeys, 3 bays, with 2 quoined ground floor doorways beneath massive lintels, each with vertically-planked split doors. To the right of each doorway, a small window opening with glazing bars. Above, a single loft doorway. West gable without copings, but with stone steps with integral kennel, leading to quoined loft doorway with plank door. Above, a wide 2-light mullioned opening with wide projecting cill, possibly perch for former gable dovehouse. Single-storeyed range, possibly former pig styes, extends westwards. SOUTH ELEVATION: Coped gable to left with stacked breathers. To right, mainly blind wall with breathers to barn bay, and random small openings.
Double purlin roof structure, supported by tie beam trusses with angle struts. 2 trusses flank the threshing bay, each with wind braces to the upper purlin, extending downwards. Single truss visible in bay to south range, similarly detailed. Massive wall plates set on outer face of wall support tie beam bearings. A substantial, multi-purpose C17 farm outbuilding, little altered and with much original detail and structural carpentry, demonstrating the mixed farming tradition of the region, and their influence upon the evolution of specific vernacular building types.
