RAF Misson, Misson, Nottinghamshire

Author(s): Roger Thomas

The site consists of a Bombing Range, Surface to Air Guided Weapon (SAGW) site and a Training Area. RAF Misson was originally established as a bombing range during the Second World War. Post War, the area continued to be used for military training and has continued to be used, as such, until the mid-1990s. The surface-to-air guided weapons site was built circa 1959/60, as one of nine 'Stage 1' SAGW sites guarding the nuclear deterrent force. The site consists of a total of sixty-four structures/features, which include thirty-two missile standings, and various maintenance and control buildings, all of which are enclosed by a chain-link perimeter fence.
