POLLEN STUDIES IN THE WEST HESLERTON AREA, NORTH YORKSHIRE

Author(s): A T Evans

Following an initial survey of the area to locate the sites of sediments suitable for palynological investigation, with the aim of providing environmental date relevant to the excavations at West Heslerton, this report gives the details of further investigations of three of these original sites. Two of the sites provided pollen diagrams covering the late glacial/early Flandrian period, too early to be relevant to the excavations . However, the third site appears to cover the period from the Atlantic period to, possibly, the post Roman or later. Two major clearance episodes are seen, one apparently at the elm decline, and the second at the start of the Sub-Atlantic. Evidence for pastoral activity is seen, but evidence for arable agriculture is, at best, inconclusive.
