ARCHAEOMAGNETIC ANALYSIS AND DATING OF A LIME KILN AT BEADNELL, NORTHUMBERLAND

Author(s): M Noel

Samples from the Beadnell limekiln were found to contain a strong and stable thermoremanent magnetisation caused by heating in the geomagnetic field. Archaeomagnetic vectors were exceptionally well grouped, defining a mean direction consistent with firing in the Late Medieval period. Comparison of the mean archaeomagnetic vector with the UK Master Curve provides a date range of 1480 - 1510 AD.
