Cask chain drive, Fremlins Brewery, Faversham, Kent

Barrels may be filled easily by allowing beer to flow from the brewhouse to an underground barrel store. This leaves the problem of raising the heavy loaded barrels back to the surface. This brewery used a chain drive to haul the containers to the waiting carts and dray horses for distribution. A brewery was founded on this site in the 18th century, but all of the buildings still in existence by the time it was demolished in 1995 were Victorian.
