Description

The gate piers are topped with shrapnel shells, commemorating the invention of the shrapnel shell by General Shrapnel in 1785. The family built Midway Manor in the late 19th century.

This illustration appeared on page 267 of 'Mansions of Old Romance' by C G Harper.
