The pumping station was built 1848 for the South Devon Railway by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It has two blocks, including the pumping engine house and boiler house, which are gabled at the south-east ends. The left block has a large gable with an altered entrance at ground level and a large round-headed window with voussoirs, whilst the right block has a keyed circular window in the gable and two entrances on the right that have been partially blocked.
