Description

Placards bearing the name 'Chadwick' can be seen on the platform. In 1865 David Chadwick unsuccessfully contested the Borough of Macclesfield but on his second attempt in November 1868 he was elected as Liberal Member of Parliament. This photograph is likely to show him during one of these campaigns. He was re-elected in 1874 and 1880. The results of the 1880 election were declared void due to bribery by the local Liberal election agent. As a result Chadwick and his fellow Liberal MP, William Coare Brocklehurst, were both removed from their Macclesfield seats. This record was previously numbered OP06843.
