Edlingham Castle, Edlingham, Northumberland

These are the ruins of a fortified house. They are built on a moated site. It was probably built in 1295-1300 for William Felton. William Felton had bought the manor from Thomas de Edlingham in 1295. It stayed as the main home of his family until the early 1400s. A family called the Swinburnes acquired the estate in 1514. It stayed in their family until c1630. By 1661 many of the buildings were pulled down so that the stone could be reused. This property is in the care of English Heritage (2010) and managed by the Parochial Church Council of St. John the Baptist, Edlingham with Bolton Chapel.
