Kiln Yard, Church Street, Whitby, North Yorkshire

A narrow street view showing workers' housing in Kiln Yard, at the foot of Church Lane. A washing tub stands in the foreground by the drain. Whitby had many similar yards, many of which can still be explored. They were built behind the original houses which fronted the main streets. They provided small, cheap houses for people who moved to Whitby to find work. Some also acted as passages between the main streets. This photograph is one of a series taken by Thomas Watson. They were used by the Victoria County History to illustrate the ‘History of the County of York North Riding: Volume 2’, published in 1923.
