Nelson Drive, Swarland, Northumberland

This bungalow was built in 1936. It was built by The Fountains Abbey Settlers Society. The society was set up in 1934 by Commander Clare Vyner. It was to provide a rural settlement for unemployed craftsmen from Tyneside. 77 houses were built, mostly with attached 9 acre plots. They were rented to families from Gateshead and elsewhere. The scheme was not a total success, many tenants soon returning to Tyneside. This is the only surviving unaltered example of the smallest of the four types of settlers' houses, and of modern movement design on such a small scale in Northern England.
