Pest House, Frythe Walk, Cranbrook, Kent

This house was built in the 16th century as a pesthouse or isolation hospital. Pesthouses were used for people with infectious diseases and leprosy. According to historical records this particular pest house was only ever used to treat victims of Smallpox. They were usually situated on the edge of a town to help prevent the spread of infection.
