Piccadilly, Manchester, Greater Manchester

A postcard view of Piccadilly gardens in the centre of Manchester. Manchester Royal Infirmary stood on this site until 1914. The City Council could not agree on how to develp the site and eventually decided to leave it as a public open space. The sunken section was originally the hospital basement. This view shows an elegant bus shelter dating from the early 1930s with motor buses pulled up alongside. The motor cars suggest the postcard dates from the 1940s. The area was completely changed from 2000 onwards.
