Sherborne Abbey and Conduit, Dorset

A view of men and boys in the street standing in front of the Conduit which was build in the early 16th cenutry by Abbot Mere as a lavatorium in the abbey cloister. Sherbourne abbey was a Benedictine abbey. The original church was created in 1122. Much of the Norman church was destroyed by fire in 1437 after a riot between monks and parishoners. Parts of the monastery were used for school buildings.
