Well Tower at Tower Lodge, Sylvan Avenue, Hornchurch, Greater London

This well tower is a conduit house, a system for providing piped water to houses. It was possibly built in the 16th century. There is a similar example of one in Kingston that was used to provide water to Hampton Court Palace. The upper part of brick may have been added in the 18th century as a dovecote. The timber framed top and spire were probably built sometime after 1875.
